In all aspects of your life, you are responsible for your own decisions and the effects they have on your life. What you experience today is the consequence of yesterday. In terms of your financial situation, you are responsible for your current financial endeavors and you and you alone are the only one who knows how you are going to keep moving down the path you have set for yourself.
Money is something that is a constant concern that is on everyone’s minds day in and day out. The importance of having enough so that bills are paid and life is easy and comfortable remains one of the major focuses of people on a daily basis. But the question is, do you really know what you are doing with your money?
Before getting into the concepts of financial investments, savings, the importance of money and so on, let’s go back to the first point mentioned. Deep down, how do you spend or deal with your money? What are your beliefs about how you deal with it?
First, try the following exercise to really figure out deep down in your mind what your beliefs about money and spending:
On a paper, write one word that you connect with the word “money”. Don’t think too much about it. Just write the first word that comes to mind. If you write a word that has a negative connotation, next to it, write a positive connotation so that you can rewire your brain to think positively when thinking about money.
Another exercise you can try is to write the word ‘money’ at the top of the page and beneath it write all the words that come to mind when you hear it. This will help you rid you of your beliefs that money is in anyway only connected to the rich or wealthy.
You can use these exercises in any way to help you alter your beliefs to positive beliefs and remove any obstacles that may keep your conceptuality one of negativity. By doing this you will be eliminating any stereotypes or judgments you may have about money such as:
Money is the biggest scum of the world.
These sayings and beliefs are ones that go against what Allah (SWT) has ordained. Allah has said that, “Money and men are the decorations of life.” He has not forbid them. Quite the opposite actually! One of the companions, Abdulrahman Bin Ouf, was one of the wealthiest of the companions whose goal was to fund and sponsor the Islamic armies. These armies were charged with the duty of spreading Islam around the world. With time, he accomplished this goal. So if you want to be like Abdulrahman Bin Ouf, set a goal, make your intentions clear to Allah and move forward.
The next step is for you to open your wallet. When you look inside, what do you see? Your subconscious mind stores images and loves to reveal hidden secrets. From personal experience, I removed all business cards regarding hospitals and clinics as well as appointment cards from my wallet. I kept only official cards needed on a daily basis (Civil ID, driver’s license, Health insurance card, bank cards) and money in the currency of the country that I am currently in. If there were other currencies, I removed them. I also removed any receipts or papers that entailed that I had spent a large amount of money. The only papers that I kept were those that reflected a deposit that was made.
The presence of restaurant cards, medical appointments, personal pictures; of those who are alive or who have passed away and credit cards hinder the mind’s ability to believe that your wallet has an abundance of money. Also, deactivate the mobile service that banks offer that send you a text message that inform you of the amount of money you have spent and tell you the total amount in your account.
Now start using word with positive connotations with regards to money, they are available everywhere. Start with trying to reach a financial goal by starting a small business or investment. It doesn’t matter how you move in that world, as long as you make the move. Any move is better then no move. After that, your faith in God must remain that he will help move along your business or investment. Allah blessed birds, ants and bees, it isn’t far off that he will bless you too! But you have to believe and keep that faith strong, for those who have been driven into the ground will surely be blessed by God’s gift.
The next step is to start reading books about financial matters, attending seminars and training courses about managing your finances, and keep up to date with current events about the latest investments. If you are an admirer of a wealthy icon or figure, follow up on their latest financial endeavors or read their life story. You can learn a lot from other’s endeavors and eventually you will feel better knowing there is hope that you can be like them.
Now, decide how motivated you are to take control of your finances and break it down accordingly:
Saving = 10%
Debts and Installments = 20%
Spending = 70%
This general breakdown is well known and not set in stone. It can be altered according to your personal financial situation. Just remember, your saving should have a clear target or goal so that you can actually reach it. Once you have done that, you have reached the goal of investing.
Before I start discussing the concept of happiness, answer the following two questions:
- Are you a person who believes that they have happiness in their lives?
- If someone offered you happiness, would you accept it?
If you answered with a firm ‘yes’ to both of these questions, keep reading this article. If you answered ‘no’ to them, then ignore this article and start trying to change your perspective and beliefs about what happiness is.
Most people believe that happiness is only reserved or felt by those whom are by nature happy or successful or wealthy. But this concept is all wrong! In fact it is an incorrect stipulation of people in general.
The choice to be happy is made by you when you decide that is how you want to feel and how you want to live your life. Happiness is a very important part of life in general. Your happiness can reflect on others and help them become happy. Part of this is a responsibility on you to be a role model for others. Some people who are not happy with their lives may be inspired by the fact that you have found your own happiness and venture to do the same with theirs. Not only does this benefit those around you, but it also increases your own happiness exponentially.
If you harbor negativity in your concept of life, venture to shift that perspective from one of negativity to positivity using a very simple exercise. Take a paper and fold it in two. Then at the top of the right-hand section write “Negative Thought” and on the left-hand section write “Positive Thought”. Your task is to convert negative thoughts into positive ones. For example, if under the “Negative Thought” section you write, “Happiness is reserved for the wealthy” then in the “Positive Thought” section change that thought to, “I am happy with who and what I am!”
Once you are done doing this for all of your negative thoughts, rip, remove or discard the “Negative Thoughts” section and keep the “Positive Thoughts” section. Read and repeat the positive thoughts that you have written every morning when you wake up, every evening before you go to sleep and throughout the day for a minimum of 21 days. What you will find is a huge shift in your belief and concept of happiness. You will see a change in yourself and find yourself being more happy and accepting of the fact that you have happiness in your life.
Being happy is a choice that have during the here and now. It is up to you to believe that you have it and it is your right and responsibility to believe and take it when you feel like it isn’t there!
The best moments of my life are when I immerse myself in my schoolbooks and the world of academia. I always feel pure joy whenever I learn a new skill or discover a new fact. This year, while coming to the conclusion of my final course of my higher education degree, I began and ended the semester in complete silence. I loathed this specific course as it was very difficult for me; until, one day, something changed in my understanding of the subject.
After the results of the first test, with which I was not pleased with the grade I received nor did the professor of said class, he requested a meeting to discuss my issues with the subject matter. I informed him that I was having difficulty with the subject and everyone knew that the most difficult test and exams came from this professor in specific. I also informed him of my health condition at the time, as I had recently been in a car accident and as a result of it, concentrating on my studies became an irritating obstacle. And, this is where my story begins.
My professor told me about another university professor who was with him while he was in the United States. This professor was in his fifties and in good physical condition and enjoyed excellent health. One day while at university, this professor passed out while next to me and was rushed the hospital. Once there, the doctors announced that he had fallen into a coma. His coma persisted for a long time and as a result he had to undergo more than one brain surgery to discover what had caused the coma. What was found was a hole in his brain that made treatment very difficult. As a result, this professor became disabled and had to cope with his new lifestyle.
My professor continued and told me that this person refused to accept the diagnosis that had been given to him or the fact that he had to live handicapped without a logical reason as to why. He spent his days laying in the hospital bed imagining how his life after he’d be treated would be. He would see himself driving his car from state to state during his vacations, surfing the waves, running on a daily basis enjoying his health. This continued until he was discharged from the hospital with orders to have a check up every 3 months.
This professor stood in front of the old doctor who was treating him and vowed that upon his next check up he would be walking on his feet again. Taking pity on his patient, the doctor accepted what the professor had vowed so as not to hurt his feelings and then the professor left the hospital. The professor decided to higher a full time nurse to stay with him at home so as to increase the amount of treatment sessions as possible. However, even the nurse maintained that trying to go back to his old life was not only extremely challenging but also next to impossible.
This professor continued to think positively and believed that with continued focus and effort he could regain the use of his legs again. Every time he tried to stand up, he would fall down. His nurse would weep for him, as she knew that the outcome would never change. Still, he continued trying for months, until the follow-up appointment. He walked into the doctor’s office on his feet with a cane whilst smiling at his doctor. The doctor was astounded at the extent of the miracle that was his patient’s recovery. From then, this professor’s case was written about and published in medical journals and, at the time, was talked about constantly. People, experts and physicians alike dubbed it a medical miracle.
I liked the story that my professor told me, but he continued to shock and surprise me when he revealed the identity of this other professor. It turned out that the story was actually about my university professor who was sitting and telling me the story! Not a day passed by that I didn’t see him smiling and in a good mood. He was always enjoying his health and continued to motivate others and encourage self-confidence in everyone. That day, he told me that he would help me until I got to where I wanted to be and that he likes intelligence as it helps him reach and achieve other goals.
It was here that my story began. He became the person who would guide, motivate and help me when I didn’t understand something or understand myself. He pushed and taught me to always be strong and not fear failure. The first achievement for me is when I passed the final exam with flying colors allowing me to graduate with a 4.0 GPA and honors. Afterwards, I started to focus on my goals to achieve them, and every time I would fall or fail, I would remember my professor’s story and get back up again and try again.
It isn’t wrong to fail in something or trip and fall down when we try something new. It isn’t, however, right to continue making the same mistakes and falling into the same traps. Try to write down a list of your goals and make a plan as to how you will achieve them. Break it down into as many small steps as possible, so that you can achieve your goals. Write more about yourself! Do you know all your strengths and weaknesses? Focus more on your strong suits and enjoy your life! Don’t listen to those who would seek to break you or bring you down…
Because life doesn’t ever stop… for anyone!
